Code for sustainable homes: a good performance in the energy section
The Code for sustainable homes is an assessment tool sustainability of new housing construction. The tool is developed by the UK government and used to establish minimum standards of sustainability in government sponsored residential development. In addition to this many local planning authorities are using this tool to set benchmarks for projects private development residential and commercial.
The Sustainable Housing Code considers a range of topics in nine different categories. Within these categories which is in energy use can be considered as the most important category: it represents more than 35% of the total score. A good performance in section Energy is essential for a Code of Good Sustainable Development Evaluation Casas. In this article we review the credit needs and discuss how it is possible to meet each themselves.
Housing types of emissions
The first edition in the category of energy referred to building's energy efficiency. This is considered in relation to the national building regulations. The national building regulations establish minimum requirements energy efficiency of a building in terms of emissions of carbon dioxide.
The issue of emissions of housing type is the largest contributor a good score in the category of energy. A total of 27 credits are available in the energy section and there is a maximum of 15 credits mom available in the first issue. Minimal improvement in building regulations which is awarded a loan is a 10% improvement. The maximum value of 15 credits is available for what is known as "Zero Carbon Home." In addition to reducing carbon emissions regulated construction with 100% more of the requirements of the building regulations a number of additional requirements are placed on a building to qualify for the title of Zero Carbon Home. This includes a minimum standard for heat loss parameter and the obligation to avoid carbon emissions from energy used for appliances in the building. It is clear that the emission reductions higher carbon can only be achieved when using the energy generated though the use of low-or zero-carbon. Number 7 of the categories of energy refers to low-carbon technologies and zero and I will discuss this in more detail in this section.
Apart from the way energy is generated, the efficiency energy of the building envelope is by far the largest contributor to the energy efficiency of a building and the focus should be aimed at improving energy efficiency the building envelope. Improved building performance is achieved by using materials that reduce heat loss from a building. This means that materials with a large value of insulation should be used for the construction of roofs, walls and bare floors. On windows, moreover, that achieve a score of British Fenestration Rating Council in band C or better and glass doors with U-values better than 1.5 should be used. efficient boilers for heating and hot water should be specified. Studies by the Carbon Trust and Energy Saving Trust has shown that a 25% reduction in carbon emissions can be achieved easily using High specification materials that improve the energy efficiency of the building envelope.
A 25% improvement in carbon emissions is awarded 5 credits. This improvement is also a minimum requirement for a total of Code for Sustainable Development Homes Level 3 rating. It is possible to achieve better than the score shown here. For example, households that will be exploited in the Passivhaus "mark significantly better.
Fabric construction
The Code for sustainable homes also awards credits for energy efficiency building envelope directly to the second edition more energy. There are two funds available. When the strategy as discussed in the previous section is at least one of these credits and in many cases both loans be achieved.
Interior Lighting
Two credits are available to promote energy-efficient interior lighting. When 75% of the internal fittings are dedicated fixtures energy efficient both loans will be awarded. Clearly this is a simple and direct CSH improve the score.
Drying space
The fourth in the category of energy requires the provision of internal drying Laundry room. A credit may be granted when there are 4 or 6 meters of drying available online. Once again it is a relatively simple measure of cost and low to implement.
Energy labeling of appliances
Two credits are available when the electrical power efficient are installed. The energy efficiency of appliances is taken from the EU Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme. To qualify for both credits the following minimum standards:
- Refrigerators and freezers or fridge freezer A +
- Washing machines and dishwashers A
- Washer-dryer or clothes dryer B or when system information is not provided
There is of course a slightly higher cost associated with improved performance of white goods. This would only be of the order of a few hundred pounds. Otherwise these loans are easy to get.
Outdoor Lighting
Two credits are available when the illumination of outer space and security lighting are designed for energy efficiency. Again, it is relatively easy to get these loans at low cost.
Low or zero technologies carbon
Under number 7 in the energy category, the Code for Sustainable Development Awards of up to two bonuses Properties in the low or zero carbon technologies apply in the scheme. Due to the application of these technologies also have a significant effect on carbon emissions of the building as described in the first number (JAN 1), the real gain in the credits will be higher. In many cases, other two credits will be awarded through the improvement in the number 1 JAN.
To be eligible for the credits of a study on the feasibility of various technologies has to be transported on or before the RIBA stage C. Besides the low or zero carbon technologies need to contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions of at least 10% to 15% credit for two credits.
When a building design includes energy-efficient building envelope of a significant source of energy demand of a house meets the water needs hot. Provide a solar thermal system is a relatively cost-effective way to provide 50% of the energy needed for hot water. Often this represents a carbon reduction of over 10% of the energy efficient homes. Other improvements can be made using other technologies. It depends on the nature and location the project is most appropriate technologies to achieve these reductions in carbon emissions. It is worth mentioning that in the UK photovoltaic cells to generate electricity will become much more cost effective from April 2010. Since that time the new feed-in tariffs, will go live. The UK government set the minimum rates electricity companies pay for energy generated from small-scale facilities. It is proposed that electricity generated by photovoltaic cells kWh will receive up to 36P.
Cycle storage
There are two cycles of credit when the space available and specific storage is provided. This credit is relatively easy to achieve in single-family and townhouses, but more difficult when considering the terraced housing and flats.
Home Office
The Code for Sustainable Homes Development awards a space for credit when it becomes available for use as an office. Although in principle this is a relatively easy credit cost and low-achieving, there is an element that requires careful consideration. The room you choose be adapted to allow its use as an office is required to have a daylight factor of at least 1.5%. While this is not an onerous requirement to satisfy excess, not necessarily all of the rooms will meet this criterion in all new homes.
Conclusions
Focusing on energy efficiency of the building envelope is an important element in a strategy to score well on the energy category of the Code for Sustainable Development Homes tool. In addition, it will provide credit in its own right but also makes it easier to achieve the credits associated with the provision of technologies low and zero carbon. The combination of these two items should allow a project to make eight to ten credits. In addition to these loans, the outstanding issues are usually simple and cost effective to implement. This will achieve another eight to ten credits. Achieving over 70% of the available funds in the energy category therefore is feasible without having to resort to advanced methods for the majority of residential development proposals.
